Dr. Matthias J. Becker is the Founding Research Advisor at AddressHate (NYC) and an AddressHate Research Scholar at New York University’s Center for the Study of Antisemitism (CSA). He leads the international research project Decoding Antisemitism and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Digital Hate Review (DHR).
A linguist by training, his work focuses on discourse analysis, pragmatics, multimodal analysis, and social media studies, with particular emphasis on antisemitism, hate ideologies, implicit communication, and digital political culture. His research integrates qualitative discourse analysis with computational and LLM-enhanced methods. Since 2020, he has led Decoding Antisemitism, the largest European study of antisemitism in digital communication, involving more than 25 experts across Europe and the United States. He is the lead editor of the Decoding Antisemitism Lexicon (Springer Nature, 2024) and the author of Antisemitism in Reader Comments (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021).
He advises governments, international organizations, and technology companies on digital hate, platform governance, and AI-based detection and monitoring, and currently develops interdisciplinary research infrastructures at NYU focused on antisemitism, racism, and misogyny in digital environments.
